During the Vietnam War, John McCain, a U.S. Navy pilot and future United States Senator, was captured by North Vietnamese forces after his plane was shot down during a bombing mission over Hanoi in 1967. McCain, who was seriously injured in the ejection and crash, was taken as a prisoner of war (POW). A propaganda video featuring McCain was recorded by his captors during his time as a POW, which later gained significant attention.

In the video, McCain is seen in a bed, injured and speaking about his experience. He identified himself and described the circumstances of his capture. The North Vietnamese used this footage as part of their propaganda efforts to showcase their treatment of American POWs and to try to demoralize U.S. forces and influence public opinion about the war.

McCain's time as a POW lasted for more than five years, during which he endured torture and solitary confinement. Despite the harsh treatment, he refused an offer of early release, adhering to the U.S. military code of conduct which states that POWs should be released in the order they were captured.

That was taken by a French film crew the year after he was shot down.

There's been a lot of talk by other people who were held there that he wasn't treated as bad as he says in the memoir. He was their prize, being an admiral's son, and they wouldn't have wanted to risk losing him.

Also, look around for web sites talking about how, while in Congress, he's blocked investigations on the POWs left behind.
