Jakarta Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Bombings 2009: Bomber Photos
The two suicide bombers, pictured dead below, were responsible for the hotel bombings which took place five minutes apart in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2009. Nine people were killed in the explosions. The Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Bombings in Jakarta, Indonesia, occurred on July 17, 2009, representing a significant terrorist attack targeting luxury hotels frequented by international visitors and expatriates. The bombings took place at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels, located in the upscale Mega Kuningan business district of Jakarta. The attacks were executed within minutes of each other during the morning hours, a time when the hotels' restaurants and lounges were busy with guests having breakfast and meetings. The first explosion occurred at the JW Marriott Hotel, followed shortly by the second at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. These blasts resulted in the deaths of nine people, including the suicide bombers, and injured more than 50 others. Among the casualties were Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals, reflecting the international nature of the hotels' clientele. The bombings were carried out by suicide bombers who had checked into the hotels as guests days earlier. They assembled the bombs in their hotel rooms using high-grade explosives. The attackers managed to circumvent the hotels' security measures, which had been strengthened following previous terrorist attacks in the region. The attack was claimed by Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian militant group with links to Al-Qaeda. This group had been responsible for several other high-profile attacks in Indonesia, including the 2002 Bali bombings. The motive behind the Jakarta hotel bombings was believed to be related to opposition to Western influence in Indonesia and retaliation against Indonesian government's crackdown on Islamic militants. The bombings led to a heightened state of security in Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia. The Indonesian government, along with international agencies, intensified their efforts to combat terrorism in the region.
