Issei Sagawa, a Japanese citizen, committed one of the most notorious crimes in recent history, attracting global attention for its gruesome nature. In 1981, Sagawa, while residing in Paris, France, murdered and cannibalized a Dutch student named Renée Hartevelt. This crime, due to its shocking and macabre details, sparked widespread horror and fascination.

Sagawa, who was a student at the Sorbonne at the time, had invited Hartevelt, a fellow student, to his apartment under the pretext of working on a poetry project. There, he shot her in the neck, leading to her death. Following the murder, Sagawa engaged in acts of cannibalism over several days.

When Sagawa attempted to dispose of Hartevelt's remains in a park, he was caught by French police. He was arrested and held for the murder. Sagawa underwent a psychiatric evaluation, and the French authorities deemed him legally insane, unfit to stand trial. As a result, he was held in a mental institution.

In a controversial decision, Sagawa was later deported to Japan due to paperwork complications and differences in legal systems between France and Japan. Upon his return to Japan, he was briefly committed to a mental hospital. However, he was eventually released without facing charges for Hartevelt's murder, as the French authorities had dropped the case against him, and the Japanese authorities found legal barriers to holding a trial.

The pictures below are part of Renee Hartevelt's mutilated body. Issei Sagawa chopped off many different body parts and ate them. Others were stored in his refrigerator. He ate her body parts while listening to the recording he had made of her reciting a poem. He put the other parts of her body into suitcases that he had bought for the purpose of storing and disposing of her body.
