Iranian Prime Minister Hoveyda at the Morgue
Amir Abbas Hoveyda, the long-serving Prime Minister of Iran under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was executed on April 7, 1979, following the Islamic Revolution. Hoveyda, who served as Prime Minister from 1965 to 1977, was 60 years old at the time of his death. Hoveyda was arrested in November 1978 amid the uprising against the Shah’s regime. After the revolution's success and the establishment of the Islamic Republic, he was tried by the newly formed Revolutionary Court, which was overseeing trials against former government officials. The trial, led by Ayatollah Sadegh Khalkhali, was brief and controversial, raising concerns about its fairness and adherence to legal standards. Hoveyda was charged with "waging war against God" and "spreading corruption on earth," common charges used against the Shah’s former officials. Despite international appeals for clemency, Hoveyda was found guilty and executed by firing squad. The execution took place in Tehran, and it was one of the first high-profile executions following the revolution.  ·  · |
