Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a prominent figure in Japanese politics, was fatally shot on July 8, 2022. The incident occurred in Nara, near Osaka, while Abe was delivering a speech at a political campaign event.

Abe, aged 67, was addressing a crowd when he was shot from behind with a homemade firearm. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his wounds, marking a rare instance of political violence in a country known for its low crime rates and strict gun control laws. The assassination of Abe, who was the longest-serving Prime Minister in the history of Japan, having served from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020, sent ripples of shock across the nation and globally.

The suspect, identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, a former member of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, was apprehended at the scene. The motive for the assassination was reportedly linked to Yamagami's personal grudges against a religious group he believed Abe was associated with, which he blamed for his mother's financial ruin.
