The James Dean picture is not actually of James Dean himself- the guy in the pic is his mechanic Rolf. The car was fitted with only one seat belt & it was for the driver- at the time of the collision Rolf was thrown out of the car & ended up surviving while James was held in place by his seat belt. The force of the impact was so great that James was almost completely decapitated- combine that with crush injuries & you've pretty much got death on impact.

I thought James Dean was decapitated in the wreck? The guy driving the other car was uninjured. The guy sitting on the ground is 'probably' the other driver?  |

The Coroner's report would list Dean's death as broken neck, multiple fractures of upper and lower jaw, multiple fractures of left and right arm and other internal injuries caused by a 2 car collision.
