The End of Osama Bin Laden, In Pictures.
Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, was killed by U.S. forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2, 2011. He had been wanted by the United States for many years because of his involvement in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. After years of searching, U.S. intelligence found a compound where they believed bin Laden was hiding. President Barack Obama then approved a secret military operation called **Operation Neptune Spear**. The raid was carried out by members of the U.S. Navy SEALs, including SEAL Team Six. They flew by helicopter from Afghanistan into Pakistan and entered the compound during the night. One helicopter was damaged during the landing, but the mission continued. The SEALs searched the buildings and eventually found bin Laden on an upper floor, where he was shot and killed. The raid lasted about 40 minutes, and no American troops were killed. After the operation, U.S. officials confirmed that the man killed was Osama bin Laden. His body was taken to the Arabian Sea and buried at sea. President Obama announced bin Laden's death to the American public on May 1 in the United States, although it was already May 2 in Pakistan.
