Edna Cintron, The Woman in Hole From 9/11
Edna Cintron, an employee at the World Trade Center, became one of the most haunting and recognizable figures from the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City. Cintron was captured in a widely circulated photograph, standing in the gaping hole created by the impact of the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, which struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Cintron, who worked for Marsh & McLennan Companies on the 94th floor of the North Tower, was seen in the photograph standing near the edge of the impact zone, a visual representation of the confusion and horror experienced by those inside the building. The image of her standing amid the destruction became one of the many poignant and tragic symbols of the 9/11 attacks. Despite the visibility of her situation in the photograph, Cintron, like so many others trapped in the towers, did not survive the collapse of the building. Her appearance in the photograph led to much speculation about her actions and the possibility of rescue, but the reality of the situation made any rescue attempt impossible due to the extreme heat and structural damage. Can someone put together a hypothesis of how she could have possibly survived the impact? |

Re: Edna Cintron, The Woman in Hole From 9/11
I will give it a stab. When the plane shot through the facade, she ducked, and the plane went in a bit further before it actually exploded. The alluminum skin that covered the steel frame work and steel frame work it's self bent back as the the plane entered the building, creating basically a pocket of space big enough for her to survive.....for a while anyway. The same kind of thing happened with a man named Stanley Praimnath in the South Tower. A man a few floors above him named Brian Clark was going down the only stairwell that was not severed when United 175 struck the South Tower. As Brian Clark was going down, a woman was telling them they had to go back up because there was fire below, and it was impassible. He heard Stanley banging around and yelling for help and didn't listen to the woman. He ignored her, found Stanley, and they both made it out of the South Tower about five minutes before it collapsed. People in the North tower did not have that choice, all stairwells were severed, and that is why so many jumped from the North Tower, and so few jumped from the South Tower. |

Great post, never seen it before No idea how she survived, but lmao @ the 'duck-comment' additional info: At 08:46:30, Mohamed Atta intentionally crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the northern facade of the North Tower (Tower 1) of the World Trade Center. The aircraft, traveling at about 404 knots (465 mph; 748 km/h) and carrying about 10,000 U.S. gallons (38,000 L) of jet fuel, hit between the 93rd and 99th floors of the North Tower. |

She was probably on the way to that floor... After the plane crashed... she went up there... and was like: and that's it. |

Re: Edna Cintron, The Woman in Hole From 9/11
I'd say she was already on that floor. If she had been in the stairwell, the doors would have been blocked by debris and fire, and she wouldn't have been able to get to the point where she is in the pictures. I'd say she would have went down the stairs instead of up if she was in the stairwell.

Good point, but she might also have been in shock. But I the ods... is biggest to survive that if you was not in the room while it happend. She might also be in the other side of the building, and had to go past there to get down? Or was in the upper floor and got there on the way down. |

Re: Edna Cintron, The Woman in Hole From 9/11
They had "office walls" on some floors, depending on the company that occupied them. Some were pretty decent and robust, others were like the wooden panels in some older mobile homes. I think they had better quality ones were this woman was, so she could have been on the other side of the same floor, and walked around to the spot where she is in the picture. If I had been there, I would have walked to the hole myself, and waved like she did. At least I think I would, you never know unless you are put in that situation I guess. At any rate, I doubt she would have come down from any floor above where she is, because the stairwells were completely severed. There are some some phone calls recorded that day that were released to the public. People said the stairwells were blocked by fire and debris on 2 out of 3 of them, and the other was had fire in it, and they could see stuff burning about 30 to 40 feet below them. That was pretty much right after Flight 11 had hit the North Tower. The longer time went, the caller's descriptions of things got worse. The North tower worked like a chimney in a way. The fire below the people grew, and as people busted windows for air, it caused heat and smoke to travel faster up the core. Some say it was reinforced concrete, but it wasn't. It was three inches of jipsome board, or sheet rock. The heat was reaching them way before the flames were, and callers said they were standing on their desks because the floor was melting their shoes. That much heat and smoke, plus floors buckling beneath them, and hearing the steel in the tower creak as it got weaker, it's no wonder so many people jumped. I think I would have jumped too. I am a CHICKENSHIT when it comes to being 10 or more feet off the ground, but I think fire would be worse. |
