Dr. Mohammad Najibullah, the former President of Afghanistan, met a violent end on September 27, 1996, when he was publicly executed by the Taliban. His death marked a brutal conclusion to his political career and a significant turning point in Afghanistan's turbulent history. Najibullah, born on August 6, 1947, in Gardez, was the President of Afghanistan from 1987 until his overthrow in 1992.

Following the collapse of his government, Najibullah sought refuge in the United Nations compound in Kabul, where he remained for four years. His stay there ended abruptly when the Taliban seized Kabul in September 1996. Najibullah and his brother were captured by Taliban forces as they tried to flee the city.
