A tragic stampede during the final hours of Cambodia's Water Festival in Phnom Penh claimed the lives of 347 people and injured 755 others. The disaster occurred at Diamond Gate Bridge on Diamond Island, a popular venue for the annual festival celebrating the end of the monsoon season.

Witnesses reported that the stampede began around 9:30 pm local time on the bridge, following hours of congestion. Initial chaos was intensified by panic, leading to a crush of festival-goers. Medical reports indicated that many victims suffered from suffocation and some were electrocuted, adding to the calamity.

The festival, attracting around four million participants, was concluding its third day. The event, marked by boat races and concerts, turned into a scene of horror as attendees were trapped on the overcrowded bridge.

Cambodian authorities, including Information Minister Khieu Kanharith, pointed to the overcrowding and panic as key factors in the disaster. Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed deep condolences and declared November 25 a day of national mourning. He also ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.

It coincides with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia.

..Police statistics show that the death toll from road accidents doubles during the annual Songkran holiday. According to the figures, between 2009 and 2013 there were about 27 road deaths per day during non-holiday periods and an average of 52 road deaths per day during Songkran.

During the 2014 Songkran festivities, 204 deaths and 2,142 injuries occurred by the end of the third day. Drunk driving and speeding were the most significant causes of accidents, in which motorcycles and pickup trucks were mostly involved.

While the Cambodian version seem to be a hell of a lot calmer. Guess tourists add to the total incidents throughout.
