Death Pictures From The Apollo 1 Tragedy
These are pictures taken of the astronauts just after the Apollo 1 tragedy on January 27, 1967. I always thought these were photos of the burned suits. But if you look at the first 2, Grissom and White, you can very clearly see their faces. On January 27, 1967, a cabin fire during a pre-flight test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station claimed the lives of three astronauts: Command Pilot Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Senior Pilot Ed White, and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee. The tragedy occurred inside the command module when the crew was conducting a "plugs-out" test, simulating conditions they would experience in space. The spacecraft was pressurized and filled with a pure oxygen atmosphere, a standard procedure at the time, which contributed to the fire's rapid spread. The intense heat and dense smoke made it impossible for the crew to open the hatch. Investigations later revealed that a combination of electrical issues, flammable materials in the cockpit, and the pure oxygen environment led to the fatal fire. In the wake of the disaster, NASA conducted an extensive investigation, leading to major design and engineering changes in the Apollo spacecraft. These included a redesign of the hatch to allow it to open quickly, the replacement of flammable materials in the cabin, and the modification of the cabin atmosphere to a safer mixture of oxygen and nitrogen at launch. Despite the tragedy, the Apollo program continued, ultimately achieving its goal of landing men on the moon and safely returning them to Earth. The sacrifices of Grissom, White, and Chaffee were not in vain, as their deaths led to significant safety advancements that have benefitted subsequent space missions. |

They never even left the ground, either. Imagine being trapped in that can, no way to escape, under those circumstances. |

Re: Death Pictures From The Apollo 1 Tragedy
Me too!! But, I am extremely surprised we even got to see these. NASA really covers it's ass when they fuck up..I found some info about the challenger disaster that I found extremely disturbing. I think most people are under the impression they got blown to bits. The passenger compartment was intact and they were all still intact, in their seats. And at least 3 of them had activated their emergency breathing packs. You never heard anything like that when it happened or since.Nothing!!! |
