Death Photos of Queen Astrid of Sweden
Astrid was born on November 17, 1905, at Arvfurstens Palats, her parents' home in Stockholm. She was the third daughter of Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland, and Princess Ingeborg of Denmark, making her a member of the House of Bernadotte. Her father was the younger brother of King Gustav V of Sweden, and her mother was the sister of King Christian X of Denmark and King Haakon VII of Norway. In August 1935, King Leopold and Queen Astrid of Belgium went on an incognito holiday to Switzerland, leaving their one-year-old son, Prince Albert, in Brussels as he was too young for the trip. Their other children, Joséphine-Charlotte and Baudouin, accompanied them to their holiday home, Villa Haslihorn in Horw, Switzerland, but were sent back to Belgium with their nannies on August 28. The next day, August 29, 1935, at 9:30 am, while on a final mountain hike before returning home, a tragic accident occurred. The King, driving their Packard One-Twenty convertible with the Queen navigating, lost control of the car. It veered off the road down a steep slope and hit a pear tree. Queen Astrid, attempting to exit the car, was ejected upon impact and fatally collided with the tree trunk. The car continued moving, eventually stopping in a lake. King Leopold was also thrown from the car but sustained only minor injuries. Queen Astrid died from her injuries at the scene in Küssnacht am Rigi, near Lake Lucerne, Schwyz, Switzerland. Queen Astrid is buried in the royal vault at the Church of Our Lady of Laeken in Brussels, alongside her husband, King Leopold III of the Belgians, and his second wife, Princess Lilian of Belgium.
