Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers Death Pictures

Civil rights activist Medgar Evers was assassinated on June 12, 1963, in Jackson, Mississippi, marking a pivotal and tragic moment in the American Civil Rights Movement. Evers, born on July 2, 1925, in Decatur, Mississippi, was 37 years old at the time of his death. As the field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi, he played a crucial role in the fight against segregation and racial injustice in the American South.

Evers was shot in the back in the driveway of his home just after midnight, returning from an NAACP meeting. The gunman, white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith, had been lying in wait. Evers was taken to a local hospital, where he was initially refused entry due to his race, despite his critical condition. He was eventually admitted but succumbed to his injuries approximately an hour later.

The assassination of Medgar Evers, coming just hours after President John F. Kennedy's nationally televised civil rights address, shocked the nation and galvanized the Civil Rights Movement. Evers became a martyr for the cause, symbolizing the struggle for racial equality and justice in America.

The first two trials of Byron De La Beckwith, held in the 1960s, ended in hung juries, largely attributed to the racial attitudes of the time. However, in 1994, De La Beckwith was retried based on new evidence and was convicted of first-degree murder, spending the rest of his life in prison.

Re: Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers Death Pictures

I wonder if the adipocere phenomenon may have contributed to the body's preservation?

There is a related post about adipocere on this very site: http://www.documentingreality.com/fo...ipocere-85151/

Re: Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers Death Pictures

I saw an HBO doc about the exhumation of his body years ago and I think I remember hearing something about his casket being lined with lead, and this being a very big factor in how well his body was preserved. Guess the bugs and elements couldn't get in...Also, there was pic on that of Evers' son as a grown man looking at his father's body - the son was the same age as Evers when he died...it was like looking in a mirror. Wish I could find it to post...

Re: Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers Death Pictures

I once met his wife, Myrlie Evers (now Myrlie Evers-Williams). She carried on his important civil rights work after his untimely and tragic death. Very nice lady.

Yes. It is part of the, "HBO Autopsy Series".

He was on here in death videos. I posted as many as I could, but, some were removed!

I remember chatting with doc about him.

I loved that show! Dr. Baden always amazed me!

My apologies. They have been removed. Let me search until I find his episode.
