Yes. Times were hard and the Conger's could not make ends meet with just a funeral home. You have to realize that this area of Louisiana was VERY rural in 1934 and is rather so even to this day. Arcadia is a small "Mayberry" town where people are still friendly and full of charm. Mr. Conger was the grandfather of a girl I went to school with. Her dad kept the business going until his death at which time I believe the family sold the business to someone else. My friend worked holidays and summers as a secretary at the funeral home. She never told that they brought the bodies to her grandfather's funeral home while we were in High School.
