Bodies From The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, India, 1984
The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, which occurred on the night of December 2-3, 1984, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, is considered one of the world's worst industrial disasters. The tragedy happened at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal. UCIL was a subsidiary of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), an American company. A leak of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas and other chemicals from the plant resulted in a massive release of toxic substances. The gas cloud, consisting mainly of MIC, spread over the densely populated areas surrounding the plant. Estimates of the death toll vary from around 3,000 to 16,000 people. The immediate aftermath saw a massive number of casualties, with people suffering from gas exposure related illnesses. The exact number of victims has been a subject of dispute. The long-term health effects have been catastrophic. Survivors and their descendants have suffered from chronic respiratory problems, eye irritation or blindness, immune and neurological disorders, and other severe health issues. The incident also caused widespread environmental contamination. Investigations revealed that substandard operating and safety procedures at the poorly maintained plant were the primary causes of the disaster. Warnings about the potential hazards were ignored by the plant management. The Indian government sued Union Carbide in a civil case and settled in 1989 for $470 million. Warren Anderson, the CEO of UCC at the time of the disaster, was charged but never extradited from the United States to India to stand trial. Union Carbide was later acquired by Dow Chemical Company, which also faced legal challenges related to the disaster. The Bhopal disaster led to major changes in industrial safety regulations both in India and internationally. However, the site of the disaster remained contaminated for many years, with environmental remediation efforts being a subject of ongoing concern and debate. |
