The house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, Long Island, New York, gained infamy due to the gruesome DeFeo family murders and the subsequent claims of paranormal occurrences by later residents. The events at this house have been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and films, most notably "The Amityville Horror."

On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six members of his family, including his parents and four siblings, in their home at 112 Ocean Avenue. DeFeo used a rifle to commit the murders, and all the victims were found lying face down in their beds. The motive behind the killings remains a subject of speculation, though DeFeo, who was 23 at the time, offered various explanations over the years.

DeFeo was arrested and later convicted of six counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to six concurrent sentences of 25 years to life. The trial garnered considerable media attention, partly due to the horrific nature of the crimes and the young age of some of the victims.

Approximately a year after the murders, the Lutz family moved into the DeFeo home. They famously claimed to experience disturbing paranormal phenomena, including strange noises, cold spots, and ghostly apparitions. These experiences were the basis for the book "The Amityville Horror," written by Jay Anson, which was subsequently adapted into a successful and widely known horror film series.

The claims made by the Lutz family have been the subject of skepticism and controversy. Several investigations and analyses suggested that the alleged paranormal events were exaggerated or fabricated.
