Asmara Tank Graveyard: Eritrea's 1961-1991 Independence War Wreckage
The tank graveyard outside Asmara holds tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks and spent shells lost by the Soviet-backed Ethiopian army during Eritrea's 1961-1991 independence war. After the war ended in 1991, the site became a memorial to Eritrean liberation. Accounts differ on whether retreating Ethiopian forces dumped the wreckage there or Eritreans gathered it after the fighting. Visitors are required to obtain a permit to photograph the site. The photographs show piles of damaged military vehicles among grass and prickly pear cactus. Several BTR-type armored personnel carrier hulls are stacked with wrecked trucks and tracked vehicles, while one view shows an eight-wheeled APC beside a red shipping container. |
