Suffered a Broken Collarbone and a Fractured C-5 Vertebra
Shamrock then made his first title defense against undefeated Extreme Fighting champion Igor Zinoviev at UFC 16. Zinoviev was a feared Russian kickboxer and sambo specialist who held wins over Mario Sperry and Enson Inoue. Shamrock shot a double leg takedown and slammed Zinoviev down so hard that it knocked him unconscious. Zinoviev suffered a broken collarbone and a fractured C-5 vertebra from the slam and had to be carried out on a stretcher. Zinoviev's fight with Shamrock forced him to retire permanently from mixed martial arts.

Re: Suffered a Broken Collarbone and a Fractured C-5 Vertebra
Bas Rutten was one of the top fighters in the world at the time. He was a veteran, six or seven years older than Frank. He was also a lot bigger - six foot one and about 205 pounds to Frank's slimmed-down five foot ten and 185 pounds. He had basically no chance of beating him. Bas was favored to win the whole tournament. It was Frank Shamrocks first professional fight! But after 10 minutes, not only did Shamrock survive, he won the decision.
