Re: Skier Falls Down Crevasse
A French skier’s terrifying fall in the Alps was captured by his GoPro and has gone viral. Although he is an experienced skier, Les Powtos stumbled upon a deceptive circle of snow, which caved into a massive crevasse, causing him to plummet into a dark, icy chute. The 36-year-old wedged his skis into the sides of the glacier as he slid through ice and snow, slowing his descent and ultimately coming to a stop. Powtos posted the harrowing video on his Instagram page with the caption “Surprise!” He explained to followers that he made it out with ice cleats and rope given to him by friends. The accident happened on the Meije mountain, located in Hautes-Alpes, France, known for its backcountry and extreme skiing. |

Re: Skier Falls Down Crevasse
He turned too hard to the left and ended up losing edges on both skies. His forward momentum was not really changed and put him right in the hole. Maybe there wasn't room but a slightly shallower left turn would allow him to set both edges, carve an arc and skirt the rim. I know that is wind blown alpine hard pack, but you can still carve a turn with your edges in that stuff.
