Australian athlete Johanna Wietrzyk had a gastrointestinal emergency during the HYROX Beijing 2026 competition. Despite this, the elite athlete managed to finish the race in 1st place among the 152 competitors in the "Pro Women" category.

Organizers from HYROX China isolated and disinfected the affected lanes during the event, disposed of contaminated gear and later deep-cleaned and replaced venue carpeting. HYROX co-founders publicly apologized for failing to intervene and pull Wietrzyk from the track during the competition. The organization officially updated its competition rulebook to empower race directors to immediately remove any competitor if blood, vomit, urine, or feces present a contamination or welfare risk, logging withdrawn participants as a DNF. Wietrzyk initially posted a defiant, since-deleted message featuring a hospital-bed selfie and the caption a win is a win. Following widespread backlash, Wietrzyk published a public apology via Newsweek, announcing she would retroactively withdraw from the event and forfeit her first-place finish and ranking points. Sportswear brand PUMA removed the Joanna Wietrzyk product line from its online store following the controversy.  · |
