A significant and deadly avalanche occurred on Mount Manaslu on September 26, 2022, caused by heavy, continuous snowfall and an unstable snow wall.

The main avalanche struck the route between Camp 3 (at approximately 6,800 meters) and Camp 4 (at approximately 7,400 meters). An earlier, smaller avalanche reportedly hit the base camp, destroying tents but causing no injuries.

The event occurred around 11:30 AM local time after the area had experienced continuous heavy snowfall for up to 15 days, accumulating several feet of unstable snow that eventually gave way.

Around 31 people were caught in the main avalanche.
One Nepali guide, Anup Rai, died in the immediate aftermath of the initial slide.

A total of 8 bodies were eventually recovered, and 3 people were listed as missing and presumed dead, though reports vary on the final number of fatalities related to the primary incident.

Many others were injured, some critically, and required urgent rescue.
