Sebastiaan Bowier set the new world record riding a state-of-the-art recumbent bicycle.
The Dutchman reached 83.13mph (133.78km/h) on a closed section of road in Battle Mountain, Nevada as part of the World Human Powered Speed Challenge.
The VeloX3 cycle that Mr Bowier was riding was jointly developed by students from two universities in the Netherlands.
