U.S.-Canadian VTOL Projects and UFO Reports, 1954-1955
This PDF contains reports, memoranda, and correspondence on developmental vertical take-off and landing aircraft, including the joint U.S.-Canadian Avro Project Y2, a near-circular VTOL aircraft. A 1954 memorandum said circular VTOL aircraft could be mistaken for UFOs by observers unfamiliar with the technology, and recommended re-examining UFO reports near Soviet military operations or assets for possible foreign VTOL designs. The file also covers a July 1955 UFO incident involving a U.S. Air Force KC-97 near Newfoundland, Canada. A USAF committee found the reported characteristics inconsistent with known Soviet, American, or Canadian military systems, and was Declassified by the Department of War under the PURSUE UAP records release (tranche of 7/10/26).
