FBI Records on Kathleen Ainsworth and the Meridian Bombing Attempt
This file concerns the June 30, 1968 attempted bombing of Meridian, Mississippi businessman Meyer Davidson, a prominent member of the local Jewish community. FBI memoranda state that local police, acting on information from an FBI informant, confronted Thomas Albert Tarrants and Kathleen Ainsworth outside Davidson's home after Tarrants placed an explosive device there. The records report that Tarrants exchanged gunfire with officers and was wounded, while Ainsworth was killed. FBI Headquarters authorized a latent-fingerprint examiner to travel to Meridian and arranged laboratory examination of dynamite wrappers, the recovered bomb, and weapons and other evidence seized by local authorities.
