This New York FBI file began after the September 1931 murder of Salvatore Maranzano, whose office contained files connected to James F. Alascia. Agents examined correspondence, file jackets, a memorandum book, immigration-related letters, and other material to determine whether Maranzano was involved in fraudulent alien reentry permits, naturalization, passports, or visas. The records conclude that the material appeared to belong to Alascia and that investigators found no evidence tying Maranzano directly to the alleged immigration activity. Reports from October through December 1931 record discussions with Assistant U.S. Attorney William B. Herlands and leave the inquiry in pending status while officials considered whether further investigation was warranted.
