FBI File on Roberto Calvi and Banco Ambrosiano
This file concerns Roberto Calvi, the Italian banker who controlled Banco Ambrosiano and was investigated in Italy over the illegal export of funds. FBI Headquarters asked the Rome Legal Attaché in 1982 to seek current information from Italian authorities because Calvi appeared relevant to growing U.S. interest in international money laundering and possible organized-crime connections. The released records include FBI and Legal Attaché teletype traffic describing Calvi's Italian conviction and four-year prison sentence, which he was appealing, and directing continued monitoring of developments. Later 1993 correspondence records an Italian request for assistance, including a subscriber check and an unsuccessful effort to obtain older Hotel Regency records in New York. Documents span: 1982-1993 | Released in 1 part Names in this file: Roberto Calvi, George W. Proctor Subjects: Banco Ambrosiano, international money laundering, Italian legal assistance, organized crime, FBI legal attaché
