FBI File on the Murder of Willie Moretti

This file concerns the 1951 murder of William 'Willie' Moretti in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, a prominent organized-crime figure. The FBI's documented role was limited to laboratory assistance for the New Jersey State Police and later responses to inquiries from the Bergen County Prosecutor. Records from 1952 show the FBI Laboratory examined six .38-caliber bullets recovered at the scene and found no matching bullets in the National Unidentified Ammunition File. Records from 1954 include Saul N. Schechter's request for information prompted by a Walter Winchell article, Newark's report that the Bureau had conducted no investigation and had no information identifying the killers, and internal summaries of unverified leads and allegations.
