FBI File on the Murder of Louis Allen
This file concerns Louis Allen, a Black Amite County, Mississippi resident who was shot to death in early 1964 during the civil rights era. The FBI's preliminary inquiry, requested by the Justice Department Civil Rights Division, sought to determine whether Allen had been active in voter registration, whether an autopsy had been performed, and whether local authorities were investigating. The released February 1964 records include FBI memoranda, interviews with local residents and civil-rights figures, and accounts from Sheriff Daniel Jones and Dr. William D. Bridges. They describe Allen being found beneath his logging truck with shotgun wounds, the sheriff's crime-scene inquiry and coroner's inquest, and witnesses' statements denying knowledge of voter-registration activity by Allen.
