FBI File on the Medgar Evers Assassination

Medgar Evers, the NAACP field secretary in Mississippi, was assassinated outside his Jackson home on June 12, 1963. The FBI assisted the Justice Department and local authorities in the investigation that led to the arrest of Byron De La Beckwith, including work on the rifle, telescopic sight, and fingerprint evidence described in the records. The released material includes Bureau routing paperwork, wire service reports, Congressional Record notes, newspaper clippings, and state court defense pleadings. The OCR shows records on Evers's funeral and public memorials, statements by President Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, press coverage praising the FBI investigation, Beckwith's motion to inspect fingerprint evidence, and a later notice of a mistrial.
