This file concerns the FBI investigation of Joel Henry Hinrichs III, who died when an improvised explosive device detonated outside the University of Oklahoma football stadium in Norman on October 1, 2005. The FBI treated the incident as a possible attempted suicide bombing because it occurred near a crowd of about 84,000 people, then deployed bomb technicians, evidence teams, computer specialists, and interview teams. The released closing memorandum describes scene evidence, searches of Hinrichs' apartment, recovery of explosive precursors and TATP, forensic examination of his computers and storage media, and roughly 200 interviews with relatives, classmates, fraternity members, and other contacts. The records describe Hinrichs as isolated and depressed, with a longstanding interest in explosives, and report no evidence of terrorist associates or a broader plot; the investigation was closed in February 2006.
