FBI File on the George Wallace Shooting Investigation
This file concerns the May 15, 1972 shooting of Alabama Governor George C. Wallace at a campaign rally in Laurel, Maryland, by Arthur Herman Bremer. The FBI treated the case as a federal civil rights and criminal matter because Wallace was campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination and Secret Service Agent Nicholas J. Zarvos was also wounded. The records include a May 1972 headquarters memorandum describing the attack, the victims' injuries, Bremer's arrest and processing, federal charges, jail security, and evidence recovered from Bremer's Milwaukee apartment and automobile. The teletypes show field offices checking hotels, motels, rally sites, campaign workers, photographs, and travel leads to determine whether Bremer had followed Wallace or other presidential candidates before the shooting. The release also includes deleted page sheets and a later Department of Justice transmittal form for investigative reports.
