FBI File on the Fred Hampton Civil Rights Investigation

Fred Hampton, an Illinois Black Panther Party leader, and Mark Clark were killed during a December 4, 1969 raid by Cook County and Chicago police at 2337 West Monroe Street in Chicago. The FBI file shown here is a civil rights matter opened under the theory of possible summary punishment by police officers, with Hampton, Clark, and several surviving Panthers listed as victims. The released records include December 1969 airtels and teletypes from the Chicago field office to FBI headquarters, reporting on community reaction, demands for a special prosecutor and grand jury, criticism of the Justice Department and FBI, and efforts to gain access to the raided apartment and interview surviving victims through their attorneys. The file also contains a forwarded Chicago newspaper account presenting State's Attorney Edward Hanrahan's and the raiding officers' version of the raid. Many later pages in the release are listed as deleted or referred pages on FOIA processing sheets.
