FBI File on the Finders Preliminary Inquiry
This file concerns the FBI's 1993 preliminary inquiry into allegations of child sexual abuse by the Finders, a Washington, D.C.-based communal group, and claims that the U.S. intelligence community had played a role in concealing abuse. The inquiry revisited the 1987 arrest of two Finders members in Tallahassee, Florida, after they were found with six children in a park, and the subsequent Metropolitan Police Department searches in Washington. Released records include FBI communications assigning investigative leads, a Justice Department request for the inquiry, Customs Service memoranda and case material, police reports, and interview summaries from 1993-1994. The records state that investigators reviewed allegations involving child pornography, sexual exploitation, kidnapping, Customs, the State Department, and foreign counterintelligence, while interview summaries report that no evidence of child sexual exploitation, child pornography, kidnapping, or other federal violations had been found in the earlier investigation.
