FBI File on the Disappearance of Charles W. McCullar
This file concerns Charles W. McCullar, who disappeared after leaving Eugene, Oregon, for a bus and hiking trip to Crater Lake National Park in January 1975. His family sought federal help through Senator William L. Scott, Representative Joseph L. Fisher, and Senator Harry F. Byrd Jr. after extensive Oregon State Police, rescue-team, and family searches produced no confirmed trace. The released records consist mainly of 1976 congressional correspondence, family summaries of the search, and FBI replies explaining that the Bureau lacked jurisdiction absent evidence of kidnapping or another federal offense. The FBI requested identifying information, searched its records without finding a match, and placed a missing-person notice in its Identification Division files.
