FBI File on Dennis Martin's Disappearance

This file concerns the 1969 disappearance of seven-year-old Dennis Lloyd Martin from the Spence Field area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Knoxville FBI records show that the Bureau maintained liaison with the National Park Service because the disappearance occurred on federal land, while stating that it had no evidence of kidnapping or other foul play sufficient to open a full criminal investigation. The released documents include June through August 1969 airtels, memoranda, and lead inquiries concerning an anonymous letter, possible witnesses, and people reported to have been near the park. Bureau officials also documented discussions with Dennis's father about the limits of FBI jurisdiction and the distinction between following possible federal leads and conducting an active kidnapping case.
