FBI File on the Assassination of Orlando Letelier

This file concerns the September 21, 1976 car bombing that killed former Chilean ambassador Orlando Letelier and Ronni Moffitt at Sheridan Circle in Washington, D.C. The FBI treated the matter as an explosives investigation and a possible violation of the federal Protection of Foreign Officials statute, working with ATF agents and the Metropolitan Police Department. The released records include same-day memoranda and teletypes reporting the blast in Letelier's blue Chevrolet, the deaths of Letelier and Moffitt, and serious injuries to Michael Moffitt. They also document initial crime-scene work, witness and neighborhood inquiries, and a Montgomery County police records check dated September 23, 1976.
