FBI File on the 2002 Washington Area Sniper Attacks

This file concerns the October 2002 series of apparently random rifle shootings in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., commonly known as the Washington area sniper attacks. Montgomery County Police Chief Charles A. Moose formally requested FBI assistance after multiple killings and attempted killings, citing suspected serial homicide. FBI memoranda dated October 8 and 9, 2002 seek Major Case designation for the Baltimore Division and document tactical support, including SWAT augmentation, profiling resources, helicopters, and a Hostage Rescue Team deployment. The records also include a Metropolitan Police Department release on the killing of Pascal Charlot and a Richmond field-office report linking the shooting of a woman at a Fredericksburg-area Crafts mall to the same .223-caliber rifle attack series.

Names in this file: Charles A. Moose, Pascal Charlot, James Martin, Gary M. Bald, Robert S. Mueller, Douglas M. Duncan
