FBI File on the 1962 Alcatraz Escape

This file concerns the June 1962 escape from Alcatraz by inmates Frank Lee Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin. The FBI treated the men as fugitives and coordinated with the San Francisco office, the Bureau of Prisons, Coast Guard, and other agencies during the search. The released records include Bureau memoranda from June 12-14, 1962, reporting that no trace of the men had been found at the prison, on the island, on the mainland, or in the water. They also contain instructions to circulate photographs and identification records, pursue possible identification leads, and gather biographical and fingerprint information, along with press and wire-service reports on the search.

Documents span: 1962 | Released in 17 parts | parts 1-9 attached here, the rest in the posts below
Names in this file: Frank Lee Morris, John Anglin, Clarence Anglin

Re: FBI File on the 1962 Alcatraz Escape

Parts 10-17 of the file.

These parts contain FBI teletype traffic, interview reports, administrative pages, and an October 10, 1962 San Francisco report concerning the escapees. Records dated August 27 through October 10, 1962 address allegations that prison employees assisted the escape, including interviews with Warden Olin G. Blackwell and a prison plumbing worker about cell access, tools, cement, and drilled vents. They also document the September 26 report of inmate-type cloth hooked near Alcatraz, a diver search that found nothing pertinent, and the recovery of a cranium determined by the coroner to have been in the bay for several years.
