Apollo 14 Post-mission Crew Debriefing, 1971

These two recordings contain the Apollo 14 post-mission crew debriefing at the Manned Spacecraft Center, now Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas. Crew members and debriefers discuss the "light flash phenomena" reported during the mission and work through the characteristics of what the crew perceived. The effect was then novel, but is now a well-documented biological effect caused when high-energy cosmic rays pass through the eye and strike the retina, producing perceived light streaks or flashes.

From part 1, at 1:32:47:

the streaks that you saw, were they very sharp phenomenon or were they rather diffuse like fuzzy? The ones I saw were very sharp. There was no mistaking what it was. It was a streak so long instantaneously disappeared. Yeah, I think that's correct.
From part 2, at 1:38:

Well, what I saw, what I reported as a streak was simply that. Uh, now, maybe the way we determined the direction subconsciously was that it was a ball of light moving in a direction leaving a tail, but I don't, I can't say that for sure. All I reported was a streak, and I had the impression of it moving from one direction to the other, and I reported that direction, and I, I can't clarify it much more than that.
