Though I guess the fact that they got away the first time proves that they were not your average bear/demented serial killer with terrifying sexual aggression.

One exception would be Arthur Shawcross. He was a dullard and basically got away with his series out of dumb luck and shoddy police work. They had to bring the profilers in to catch him, but once they did, they got him in a hurry by staking out one of the bodies after he dumped it since they knew he was returning to them.

Another dummy was the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgeway - not all of them are highly intelligent - they just luck out.
