Re: Vintage Postcard
17 y/o Jesse Washington was lynched in 1915 after an all-white jury found him guilty of the rape & murder of a white woman. The trial lasted an hour; the jury deliberated only 4 minutes. A mob outside the courthouse wrapped a chain around his neck and dragged him through the city of Waco, TX. The mob hit Washington with anything on hand including shovels. His fingers were cut off before being hoisted in the air & set on fire. A photographer had been hired to be on hand to take pictures of the murder. The evidence against Washington was circumstantial, nor was he allowed an attorney during police questioning. Yay for due process. |
