My grandfather's older sister (whom he never knew existed, until she died) was sent to an asylum as a teenager, after she slept with a married man. She died, still in the asylum, at the age of about 90.

Who knows how many of these people would have been fine in today's world with just that little bit of extra help.

And we all know stacks of more mundane problems today were misdiagnosed then, especially 'women issues'.
