All I could wonder is how many of these people were actually mentally ill and how many were just put there for the wrong reasons :(

My grandfather's older sister (whom he never knew existed, until she died) was sent to an asylum as a teenager, after she slept with a married man. She died, still in the asylum, at the age of about 90.

Who knows how many of these people would have been fine in today's world with just that little bit of extra help. And we all know stacks of more mundane problems today were misdiagnosed then, especially 'women issues'. |

Yes, they are very hyper-aware about everything that goes on in the cosmos, they have been around for several more millenia than humans have, also said to be telepathic and are able to sense when humans see them from this light spectrum. existing far more than just the 3rd Dimension.
