Re: Victorian Mourning Photos

which is dead in the first photo?
Possibly both father and child are dead in the first photo. Look at the father's hands, and the strange eyes are possibly painted on.

Re: Victorian Mourning Photos

ah, no. the girl's alive. She's just taking a photo with her dead sister. sorry for not being clear about that. Same with pic #2, only the girl in the middle is dead, posing with living people. o.o

Photographs in the 1800s were expensive! Their families probably wanted one last memory of them. though I agree, it is creepy pretending that they were alive.

Had to stare at the second picture for a long while after reading your comment, and it is so freakish, the girl, in my opinion, looks more alive....and there she is... standing there and dead......

Re: Victorian Mourning Photos

I absolutely love these type of pictures. I believe that I have some too. Bought them from an antique store.

Re: Victorian Mourning Photos

In the second picture, it almost looks like the girl is leaning back against a table - you can see part of it under the mom's left arm and also what looks like a table leg is visible at the girl's feet. Or maybe she's propped up on it; her feet don't look like they're flat on the floor.
