I got to try the real absinth while on a soldier exchange in France. We met a cool French couple when we were in a wine shop about to buy some really bad wine. The guy said not to buy it and showed us the good wine. Then after chatting a little he invited us to their flat and brought out a antique traditional Absinth stand set up. It trickled the absinth through a sugar cube down through ice then down into the small glass and the Absinth turned white. We killed the whole bottle. The rest of the night is kinda foggy, but I remember a really weird buzz and an epic hangover.

Absinthe isn't actually hallucinogenic. Watched a TV program where they proved it. It turns out the rumors got started when a man who killed his family was reported to be drunk at the time and one if the things he had drunk was absinthe.
