Even if they used pine tar on him (rather than petroleum tar), he'd have been covered from head to toe in liquid in the 130-140°F range before they feathered him. That had to hurt like hell! |

Naphtha would likely be one of the more skin-friendly options. Not that naphtha is very skin-friendly though. I've cleaned some wicked-sticky stuff off equipment with commercial chemical-cleaners, but nothing I'd want to put on my skin or soak in to get something like THAT off. |

He probably refused to salute the flag, or had unconventional religious views. Joseph Smith was stripped naked then tarred and feathered.
