Religious psychosis or self inflicted wounds. The fact that the location of these wounds changed from hand to wrist seems to lend credence to the idea of hoax, but there are a few stories that cannot be explained by mere science.

No problems believing it. At least in Padre Pio's case, he received the stigmata not only on the hands, but on his head (crown of thorns) and side (where Jesus was speared)

wouldn't they be in wheelchairs though? when folk were crucified their knees were shattered so all the weight fell on their arms

I'm no expert but I thought it widely accepted that Christ was actually nailed below the wrist as the hand would not support the body
