Re: Steatopygia: That's a Big Ass!
My favorite topic! Steaopygia is likely a trait that was more widespread among humans long ago -- look at the fertility carvings that were created in caves. Having a pronounced repository of fat is a wonderful survival tool -- it contains both nutrients and water, for when times are tough. Especially good if you want a consistent milk supply for the young ones. At the present time, steatopygia is commonly found in the Khoisan people of South Africa, and the Andaman Islanders, off the cost of India. The man in the picture above is Andamanese, as are some of the other ladies if short stature. I have attached my favorite steatopygia image, from the Andaman island, which shows yet another use of that great behind. Cute! The "Circa 1918" image is mislabeled. This is a drawing of Sarah Bartman (or Saartjie Baartman), an unfortunate South African woman who was brought to France and England to be paraded about as a curiosity due to her steatopygia. She died in 1815, at the age of 25 or 30 (she did not know her exact date of birth). Sarah was from the Khoikhoi, or Khosian people, who were referred to by Europeans as "Hottentots". She was marketed as "The Hottenton Venus". In addition to her steatopygia, the European's were fascinated by her large, hanging, labia minora, sometimes refered to as "The Hottnetot Apron". To quote historian of science Stephen Jay Gould, "The labia minora, or inner lips, of the ordinary female genitalia are greatly enlarged in Khoi-San women, and may hang down three or four inches below the vulva when women stand, thus giving the impression of a separate and enveloping curtain of skin". Baartman was born in South Africa, was then taken to England for exhibition. In London she was sold to a Frenchman who exhibited her there. She died an alcoholic prostitute. She never worked with PT Barnam, nor was exhibited in the States. Sarah was of particular interest to scientists of the day, who considered her physical traits as possible evidence that she represented a link between humans and animals. The French were fascinated with Sarah's body even in death. After dissection, her skeleton, genitals, and brain were put on display at Paris' Musée de l'Homme, until 1974. A life-size nude model of her body was on display until 1976. There are many wonderful books about Sarah's tragic tale, which shed's a rather unfortunate light on nineteenth century science and society. |
