Facts are very hard for Serbs/Russians and their allies to accept, I know.

The bad history in the region goes much further than WWII. It goes back to the Serb terrorism of the Black Hand - a Serbian terrorist organization that planned an assassination in order to plunge Europe into war.

The fact is, Serbs have been terrorizing their neighbours for centuries and have the distinction of starting WWI. Serbs have tried to ethnically cleanse their neighbours since the 1913 when they tried to cleanse Albanians, then again in the 1920s when they tried to cleanse the Catholics of Croatia and the Protestants of Slovenia too.

Serbs in the 1920s shot political representatives in a session of parliament - an unheard of act of barbarianism that even the Mongols would have been enraged by.

Then there are the dozens of Serbs — including the President of Serbia himself - who have been brought to justice for their war crimes and crimes against humanity. Today, Serbs are still trying to hide their war criminals.

It’s no wonder these days that Serbia is considered an international pariah.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the people there the same ethnically, with the only difference being religion (Serbian=Eastern Orthodox, Bosnian=Muslim and Croatian=Catholic)?

Although Croatians, Slovenians, Serbians, Montenegrins, Macedonians etc all share similar languages and cultures, over time they became very different.

During the invasions of the Muslim Turks into Europe from c. 1450 to 1683, the Croatians and Slovenians gravitated to the influence of the West. Serbia became aligned with the Orthodox East, and when Serbia was overrun by the Turks Croatia became the main battleground for the wars between Christian West and the Muslim East.

Croatia was identified as the “bulwark of Christianity” by the nations of Western Europe, who flooded Croatia with money, weapons and soldiers to help keep the Turks at bay. Croatia was Europe’s final line of defence against the Muslim Turkish hordes invading Europe - if Vienna in Central Europe fell, the rest of the continent would follow. But the Croats, with a lot of help from the West, maintained their impenetrable defence and the Turks were decisively defeated.

The date that the Muslim invasion of Europe was defeated at the gates of Vienna - September 11, 1683. A date Muslims would choose as a date of revenge for the 9/11 attacks.

As you can see, the Balkans are known as the powder keg of Europe for very a good reason.

So these nations - despite their similar cultural roots - developed very differently and with a very different national mentality and extremely different goals that gradually became inconsistent with each other. Neighbours started to squabble over what little land there was to go around.

The Slovenians and Croatians embraced Western civilization, the Latin alphabet, and the Catholic and Protestant faiths. Due to the strong Western influences, they also developed a strong affinity for art, culture, personal freedoms, and democracy.

Croatians maintained very close ties to their western allies, and Croatian sailors lent their expertise to the English, Spanish, and French navies during the early voyages of discovery. Many Croatian sailors joined Christopher Columbus to help him out during his voyage that discovered America.

During the Muslim invasions of Europe, the Croats welcomed their fleeing Serbian cousins and gave them land to farm, in exchange for the Serbs helping out to defend Croatia and western Europe against the Turks. Granting the Serbs asylum from Muslim Turkish massacres, only for the Serbs to turn on them later when they gained more political strength, was a big reason why Croats learned to never trust their Serbian neighbours ever again.

The Serbs spent less time on art and culture, and more time on more important things like fighting in order to eventually win their freedom. Gradually the Serbs developed into a particularly aggressive group that ferociously sought to obtain independence from the Turks and unite all Serbs into one country, no matter that many of them lived in neighbouring countries. Their fanaticism grew so strong, that eventually it was a Serbian terrorist’s assassination of a high ranking foreign government that plunged Europe into war - which was the plan of Serbian Colonel Dimitrijevic (officer in the Serbian army and secret police, who had already been behind a successful coup d’etat in Serbia. These men wanted a major war, and they knew how to get it.

The situation between the Croatians and Serbians is kind of like the difference between North and South Korea: two very similar nations that, over time, have developed extremely different (and often directly opposing) views of the world.
