This honestly is wayyyy more tame than it's described in it's history. When I was studying Asian history for my undergrad there were SEVERAL accounts of them being forced to disembowel themselves. Not just stab themselves in the stomach

Yeah, the guy with the gun is the "second" to put the person doing Sepuku out of their misery after they do the cuts. Back in the samurai days, the "second" would cut off the head of the person doing Sepuku after they did the back and forth cuts. In the older Samurai days, there was no second, and the person died a slow, agonizing death. Pretty amazing set of photos to see this in WW2 times. |
