Question About Old War Photos

I know some are from old AP photographs or "official" sources but every once in a while, I'd come across a rare photo from Iwo Jima or something that I've never seen here or anywhere else, but found on some random thread on the internet (reddit, etc). It makes me wonder if there's more footage and photographs out there that we simply don't know exist. Would these be in personal photo albums of relatives who were combat photographers, are they under lock & key someplace at some institution?

Re: Question About Old War Photos

How have you been here since 2015 and don't know how these boards are supposed to work? You need to either post content that includes an image or video or find a place, like The Water Cooler (or whatever they're calling it today) to post your thoughts and ask questions.

And while I don't believe there are any dumb questions, I think it's pretty self explanatory that old photos exist in great quantities all over the world, both in private collections and the sorts of archives you mentioned. But they, like the bodies featured on them, will eventually decay in time. Digitizing them so they aren't lost forever seems I important.

I know how they work, my question was more along the lines of where such photos and footage are originally sourced.

Re: Question About Old War Photos

I actually keep a close eye on online auctions all over the internet to find vintage b&w crime scene photos for my collections.

I still keep finding them so its not unimaginable that there's still photos from famous battles that are still waiting to see the light of day.
